As Counsel and Advisor:

Mr. Hendel has acted as counsel and advisor to parties in a broad range of complex commercial and investment disputes.

He acted as counsel in a landmark Energy Charter Treaty case, and as advisor in a landmark contractual claim against a foreign sovereign currently pending in the US federal courts.

He has acted before tribunals of arbitral institutions including the ICC, the LCIA, the SCC, the HKIAC and various ad hoc panels, in proceedings conducted in both English and Spanish and under a wide variety of governing laws.

He has frequently advised clients in connection with prospects for obtaining third-party funding of their claims.

As Arbitrator:

Mr. Hendel has acted as arbitrator in dozens of international commercial cases, conducted under various sets of rules and different applicable laws, in various arbitral seats and across a broad range of business sectors. Among the areas in which he has received recurrent mandates are energy disputes (both oil & gas and renewables), post-acquisition M&A disputes and joint venture disputes in a variety of business sectors.

In the sports area, he sits regularly as arbitrator of the FIBA Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT), hearing principally labor contract disputes. He is also Deputy Chairman of FIFA Football Tribunal’s Dispute Resolution Chamber.

In the commercial area, he sits frequently on international institutional and ad hoc panels hearing all manner of contractual disputes, including with relative frequency post-acquisition disputes and construction disputes.

As presiding or sole arbitrator, he conducts hearings and renders awards in English, Spanish and French.

As Transactional Advisor:

For two decades prior to establishing a focus in the area of international dispute resolution, his practice – in New York, Paris and then Madrid –was centered on a broad range of corporate, commercial and financial matters, in particular, international financings, international M&A and international joint ventures.

As Academic and Thought Leader:

Mr. Hendel served for several years as Adjunct Professor at the Carlos III University of Madrid, responsible for training the university’s team for the oral rounds of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna.

He has been Adjunct Professor at Madrid’s Instituto de Empresa, teaching International Contracts in its international LLM and has acted in a variety of other academic capacities.

He is a founding moderator of ITAFOR, the ITA Latin American Arbitration Forum, an online discussion group focusing on Latin American arbitration and ADR.

He is a member of the Executive Council of the European Advisory Board of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR).

Mr. Hendel is also a member of the Governing Board of the Fundación Pro Bono España.
